Chapter Director Thoughts

The weather has been superb, the days have been long and busy and the riding has been great!! And summer is passing us by too quickly, we think.  CJ will be in school in a little over two weeks.  Our vacation was great and our stay in Tulsa was so much fun.  Wing Ding provided us with entertainment, friendships, fun and shopping.  Ah, the shopping.  The bike is beautifully pinstriped, has new chrome and the trunk even got organized.  It is ready to go and we have more fun and riding planned, so join us if you can or enjoy you ride wherever you go.

Chapter News

The July get-together was at the Village Inn in Norfolk.  What great place to eat and the hospitality was wonderful and we each got a free piece of pie from them.  We had 51 friends gather for an evening of sharing and fun.  A BIG THANK YOU TO Dick and Kathy Cornett for co-hosting this evening with us and a BIG THANK YOU TO Jaye Adkins, her staff and the Village Inn for their hospitality and all the door prizes they donated.  Thank you to Mike and Leah Cornett and Trike Central for the door prizes they donated also.  Mike and Leah support us with door prizes and friendship throughout the year so the next time you are in Norfolk stop in and say hi and thank them for their support of our Chapter.

Supper rides are being very well attended and we had to order more participation pins.  Cindi is trying to get them distributed so if you have not received yours let her know and she will get them to you.  20 GWRRA members signed the book June 18th at the Down Home Bar and Grill and 18 members signed in on July 23rd at Ole’s in Niobrara.  It’s never too late to join in for a ride and some fellowship and fun on the Thursday Nite rides.  We have 5 or 6 more selected rides to go on.

Have you gotten your new Roadrunner pin yet?  They are very nice and only cost $3.00 each.  Please see Deb Holmes or Denise Stevens at the next get-together to get yours.  We also have the Chapter roadrunner hats available for $13.00.  See Gary or Cindi to get one of those. The yellow MAD T shirts are in and we will have them for you at our next get together.

The Big news in the Chapter is Mike and Denise Stevens are now our District Rider Educators taking the place of Bob and Charlotte Lake who have moved on up to Region E Assistant Rider Educators.  The bad news is (at least to us) that Mike and Denise are stepping down as our Assistant Chapter Directors.  They have really been our support and we would not and could not have done this Chapter Director job without them.  We thank them deeply from the bottom of our hearts.  We now need a new Assistant Chapter Director and are appealing to each of you to please help us out. If anyone is interested please let us know.

                                          Rider Education

Wow, have we had a great summer or what?  The weather has been great for riding except for a little rain.  By the time you receive this you will probably be on your way or on your way back from Sturgis.
Have you ever dropped your bike?  (I dropped mine in my driveway. (I thought that side stand was fully engaged.- NOT).  First, don't get upset ( hard step, extremely difficult) if you drop your bike because that is why Honda put the safety bars on it.  Be sure that you are safe from traffic and then access the situation.  Why did it fall over?  Is the footing secure? Are you in condition to upright it yourself?  Yes, there will be probably be help there if you need it but what if there isn't?
To help you get the bike up by yourself try the following:

1. if the bike is heavy laden take some of the weight out of the trunk and saddlebags and this will lessen your burden

2. be sure the bike’s engine is stopped, make sure the bike is in gear as you do not was the bike to roll as it is being lifted

3. if the bike is on the right side engage the side stand prior to raising the bike

4. with your back to the bike grab the left handlebar with your right hand and passenger grip with your left hand bring your body to a 90 degree angle against the seat with your hips to the seat itself

5. place your feet shoulder width apart and cock your knees slightly, do not crouch as if you intend to squat-lift the bike up- your back should not be bent as all – the bike is raised by a pushing motion by your leg muscles and your hips- not a lifting effort

6. shuffle backwards and upwards a couple of inches at a time and push with your hips- the bike will start to raise- TAKE YOUR TIME

7. when the bike is almost upright- using your right foot lower the side stand fully and settle the bike’s weight on it- if your bike fell on the right side you will engage the side stand prior to lifting

8. step away from your bike- it will stay upright.

CONGRATULATIONS YOU HAVE JUST RAISED YOUR FALLEN BIKE.  CAUTION: THIS WILL NOT WORK ON A TRIKE.  This is something you can practice at home.  All you need is a heavy blanket or mat to lay the bike on and then upright it, I saw a lady do this at Wing Ding.  She said that she would not be able to do this but alas, she did it.  RIDE SAFE,  Dallas

Nebraska District News

The Region E Rally theme this year is “Pirates Wing’n on the Mississippi” and there will be a contest for each district.  Each district can design and bring a flag 1 foot high by 2 feed wide.  The flag needs to include the District, Region and Chapter and it and CAN NOT be professionally done and it can be any type of material, color or design.  If you are interested in helping with the Flag that will be brought to the Region E Rally please contact Lance or Diane.  We need volunteers to help run games on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 12pm and 1pm to 330pm.  Illinois and South Dakota will also help with the games.  Anyone willing to help at any of these times please contact Lance or Diane to schedule a time.  All the Districts need to provide one male and one female gift basket for the raffle tables.  Please let us know if you would like to take care of getting this done.
