News from the Home Front for March 2010

Last week, a fellow motorcycle enthusiast passed away.  Dan Brozek, my brother, died due to complications after a surgery to remove scar tissue from previous surgeries.  He was a proud owner of a Honda 650L, which used avidly around the farms.   He will be greatly missed.  It was a comfort to us and our family to see and hear from many of you during our time of sorrow.  Thank you all for your overwhelming support.  We are truly blessed to have so many friends that care.

The flyer for the 2010 Nebraska- South Dakota District Rally was sent out earlier last month as a PDF. Hope everyone got it and could open it. If not let us know and we will send you a copy.   Update on the rally later in the newsletter.

Wing-Ding is in Des Moines IA next year. We have Hotel Reservations at the

Holiday Inn Downtown at Mercy Campus.

Rider Education

A long time ago, or so it seems, you probably prepared your bike and parked it for the winter.  A few days ago our local news station informed us that we had 90 days below 40 degrees!  Now for the good news, Spring is around the corner and the temperature will be going up so that means the riding season will soon begin!  You have probably checked the oil, replaced any worn tires and preformed a T-CLOCS inspection, dusted off the bike and are ready to go.

You may have had logged many miles on the bike or maybe not so many but it probably is months since you were on the bike.  Perhaps it would be a good idea to practice your riding skills in a parking lot away from other vehicles or on a road with not much traffic.  You can practice braking, curves, braking in a curve, pulling from a stop sign to name a few.  As each year passesour reactions may slow down so a little practice to get the kinks out before you are at road speed may not be a bad idea.

Do you have your emergency contact sheet in your bike and is the information current?  Do you have your I.C.E. numbers in your cell phone?

Keep in mind that although you are ready to ride the other drivers may not be expecting or have forgotten to be on the lookout for Motorcyclists so be extra cautious and presume that the other driver may not have seen you.  Have a LONG and enjoyable riding season. Take care and Ride Safe!

News From Your Leadership Trainers

  From Lance & Diane
We just got back from Davenport, IA where we took the OCP course [1 and 1/2 days].  It was definitely a weekend that provided some really good training.  Now that GWRRA has set the goal of August 31, 2010 for all Operations directors to complete the OCP course, we need to come up with a weekend for all of us to take the 1-1/2 day OCP training.  Nancy and Bill James will be doing the training along with trainers from other states.  Nancy and Bill taught at Davenport and will be training in Iowa, Missouri and MN in an effort to help the other states and get trainers to help in NE.

I will need your input by March 10th so we can identify a time to have the training.

There are also times in other areas when you can take the training.  We will not have training in NE during these times as James' are training at most, if not all, of them.
The following dates are times available to all of you to take OCP outside of NE.  Additionally, there will be some other OCP training dates added including one in Mankato, MN with the date still to be determined.

March 6/7           Wisconsin Dells, WI
March 20 – 21    Wildwood Lodge, 11431 Forest Ave, Clive, IA [University Ave in Des Moines] (800) 728-1223 www.thewildwoodlodge.com
Deadline to register is March 10, 2010 to Sue and Dennis Tasker

                        Also Decatur, IL
Aprill 10-11        St Louis, MO - Let James' know if you are going to this

April 28-29        Branson, MO just before the Missouri Rally

June 31/July 1    Des Moines, IA just before Wing Ding

Below are dates James' are available to train in NE so chose a couple weekends from these dates and get back to me by March 10.

Mar 27/28    April 17/18    May 8/9    May 15/16    May 29/30[Memorial Day weekend]

June 5/6    June 12/13    June 26/27    July    10/11

Aug 7/8    Aug 14/15      Aug 28/29

Thanks for helping get this done. Lance & Diane

March LTD Newsletter: OCP

Nancy and I participated in the first Region E OCP (Officer Certification Program) presented in Davenport IA.  There were about 60 attendees which included District Directors, their Assistants plus the Region Operations Team, and 12 OCP trainers from 6 states in the Region [ND & SD don’t have LTD Trainers].  What was interesting was seeing people’s perception before and after the one and a half day class and then their reactions during and at the end of the program.  Everyone seemed to have a new outlook on the program as well as their positions.  We came away not only believing every member deserves a well-trained leader but also that the leaders believed it also and everyone came away learning new things regardless of how long they had been a GWRRA member.

Here is a quote from Dave Carter [past Region E Director and now Region E LTD Trainer] newsletter, “In Region E the LTD Trainers who have been given this task have until August 31, 2010 to get all Directors and Assistant Directors certified. The seminar is open to ALL members, not just officers.”

In NE we won’t set the date for training until after March 10th replies.  However, as was sent out earlier, there are ample opportunities to take OCP - the soonest being in Des Moines, IA on March 20 and 21.  Let Bill and Nancy James know by March 10 if you plan to go to Des Moines.  If you have any questions at all about this program and the timing, give us a call.
