CHAPTER DIRECTOR THOUGHTS
Fun, FUN, Fun! Are you having fun yet? We are packing and
really looking forward to our vacation.
We plan to visit some family, relax and have some fun!! We know that some of you are on vacation and
some getting ready to go on vacation. We
hope you relax and have fun no matter where you go, whomever you see or what you
do. We will be looking forward to
hearing all about it and seeing the photos you care to share.
CHAPTER NEWS
The annual Bar-B-Q at Chuck and Linda’s was just great. The weather offered us an almost picture
perfect summer evening. The food was
superb. I swear the best bakers and
cooks live in northeast Nebraska and southeast South Dakota and all of them
belong to Chapter NE-NE. Our host couples, Chuck and Linda Steffen, Mike and
Denise Stevens and Bill and Lisa Dendinger, provided the pork tenderloin, the
tableware and drinks. There were 34
folks at the get-together to share the great food and friendship
that bikers enjoy.
We heard some reports on the
District Rally this year and we heard it was the best one yet! Thanks to Lance
and Diane Brozek (who are Chapter Members of our Chapter
NE-NE) and their great staff for putting together such a fine time for
all.
Don’t forget to take your
“Roadrunner” along so he can get his picture taken with you on
your
Travels this summer. He likes to
get around too, you know.
It was suggested that we
participate with the Nite-Out riders again this year for a couple of supper
rides each month throughout the riding season. We think this was great fun last
year.
There were 16 Chapter members
on the Supper Ride to the Tiger Tavern which was not a very good evening to be
biking and 24 chapter members on the supper ride to CJ’s at the Lake which was
beautiful evening for a ride! July
supper rides will be July 8th at Stocky’s Picnic in at the Plainview
City Park on Highway 20 in Plainview, Nebraska and July 15th at
Sidelines Bar
and Grill on Main Street in Wakefield, Nebraska. The August Supper rides will be August
19th at Daddy’s Country Café on Main Street, Neligh, Nebraska and
August 26th at the Pizza Ranch 1501 Broadway Yankton, South
Dakota.
THE NEXT CHAPTER GET-TOGETHER IS NOT AT THE STANDING BEAR BRIDGE IT
IS
at the Blue Moon Restaurant which is 8 miles West of
Niobrara at Lazy River Acres on Nebraska
Highway 12.
We still plan to take pictures, as there is some really nice background
scenery. Please come as early as you can
so that we can get everyone’s picture with their bike and a
group picture if possible.
The meeting will be at 7 pm.
Speaking of pictures - while Cindi was working on the scrapbook we
noticed that it needs to be updated again.
First of all many of us have updated and changed our bikes and secondly,
we have many new members and a few who aren’t so new that we do not have any
pictures of them or their bikes so we would like to have a photo session before
or after the July get-together. Also a
new group photo would be great!
The Chapter is planning a ride-in breakfast to the Fly-Way Café at the
junction of Highways 14 and 12 on Sunday July 25th at 10AM. Everyone will ride in for a wonderful buffet
breakfast and then some or all may plan a ride or rides for the day if they
would like to.
What are you doing on August
28 and 29? Is it a mystery then come
along for the Annual Chapter NE-NE Mystery Ride that is being planned. Round and round we go where we end only the
planners know so come along for what will be surely be a FUN weekend. We will get the details on when and where to
meet in the future.
RIDER
EDUCATION
Rider
fatigue can be deadly. It can happen any time, but it is most
frequent on long rides after dark. Along
with feeling drowsy, other signs of rider fatigue are back tension, burning
eyes, shallow breathing, inattentiveness, and erratic
riding.
One
aggravating factor is alcohol. Alcohol
is a depressant, and even one drink can be enough to produce a drowsy
rider. Other culprits include today’s
Gold Wings themselves. They are
smoother, quieter, and more comfortable.
Cruise control is a wonderful feature but can contribute to falling
asleep while riding.
The National
Safety Council recommends the following tips for staying awake – and staying
safe – when you are riding:
· Get
enough rest. This may seem obvious, but
if you have not had a restful sleep, you are inviting rider
fatigue.
· If
possible, do not ride alone.
· Try
to avoid riding long distances at night.
· Use
the audio on your radio to help keep you awake and
alert.
· Use
the cruise control sparingly.
· Watch
ergonomic factors. Ride with your head
and eyes up along with a good riding
posture.
· In
the daytime wear sunglasses to fight glare and help prevent eye
fatigue.
· Take
frequent breaks.
· Avoid
overeating; have light meals and snacks.
Don’t drink any alcohol.
· If
you still find yourself getting drowsy riding, pull over into a rest stop or
just stop for the night at the next motel.
· GOLDEN
RULE: Listen to your Co-Rider who may well
know what’s going on better then you.
Co-Rider, watch for the warning signs for fatigue and tell the rider YOU
need a break. Once stopped, visit about
your observations.
Remember,
safe riding is important and demands your full
attention.
Stay awake, stay alert, and stay
alive.
