NE-SE Chapter Staff:

Treasurer-Ronny Aden

Newsletter Editor -Carol Aden

You may have noticed a blank spot under the position of director where
the chapter staff has been listed. That is because Al and Karen have
decided to resign their leadership role in order to pursue other interest.
We wish them well and thank them for their efforts on our behalf.
So, where does that leave us? Good question. We will be meeting with
the district staff in December to discuss this matter. Meantime we will
need to get together and decide whether or not there is enough interest in
seeing this chapter continue. If we choose to continue, then we must
have a new director appointed and we must have a treasurer. The national
office dictates that they must not be in the same household.
If there is not sufficient interest then the charter for our chapter will be
rescinded and those of us with an interest in participating at a local level
can join another chapter. Chapter “O” out of Gretna is the closest one for
many of us. There is also a new chapter out of Grand Island.
We will be meeting Saturday, November 21 at Rod's at 10:30 a.m. Bring
a quart of Chili and table service for a soup lunch. We will provide the
crackers and ice tea to drink. There is a pop machine available. We will
put all the chili together to heat. While our soup warms we will discuss
the future of the chapter. It is very important that interested parties attend
this get together. If you are unable to attend please let Ronny and I know
your thoughts regarding the chapter's future.
Hope to see you there!

never been to Wing Ding. It is for your benefit that the following frequently asked questions are
addressed here. We will try to include more information in the months to come. You may contact any
officer or staff person listed on the page 1 of this newsletter for more information or visit the following
web site http://www.wing-ding.org/faq.html

● Why is Wing Ding always held over the 4th of July?
Many members find this time period easier to schedule their vacation; they can tack on the holiday, thus
taking less time off to attend Wing Ding. Also many vendors have found that his time period fits well in
their schedule. And, this is a good time for the Association to negotiate with cities for “the business” of
Wing Ding. Summer is generally a slow time for many cities; and GWRRA gets better deals for members
on hotel rooms, entertainment, etc.

Rider Education      by Carol Aden

Urban traffic survival was the topic of last month's safety presentation at Rod's. The traveling
motorcyclist's greatest hazard is motor vehicle traffic. Cities are a combat zone of cars, trucks, buses,
trains, trolleys, bicycles, skateboards and other assorted wheeled vehicles. It's not the sort of environment
we would choose to ride our motorcycle in but we do it anyway, don't we? Here are a few tips gleaned
from last month's safety session.
● Get in the habit of scrutinizing stuff w-a-a-a-a-ay down the road. The farther ahead you spot the
trouble, the more time you will have to observe it, make a decision about and deal with it. The
experts recommend you look ahead 12 seconds. To put this another way, you want to spot any
problems 12 seconds before they get close enough to become a hazard to you. This gives you time
to move your motorcycle away from a bad situation. For example if the rattling car transporter is
too distracting you can speed up, slow down or change lanes to get away from it.
● Try to separate yourself from other hazards before you get in an intersection. They are trouble
enough. Move away from trucks or buses that will block your view.
● Keep your eyes moving to take in as much as possible and observe the details of what is happening
around you. You need to be aware of everything. Focus on the potential hazards. That rattling
transporter may be the focus of your attention but the problem is that oncoming car in front of you.
Left turning motorist are a frequent hazard for motorcyclist. Focus on that car.
● Intersections are danger zones. Recognize that “intersections” include anywhere vehicles can cross
paths, whether on an 8 lane arterial a 2 lane intersection or a mall parking lot.
● Practice emergency avoidance maneuvers such as quick stops. Practice all the right cornering
techniques even when you don't have to. If your in the habit of using the front brake to the limits
of traction, you'll squeeze the brake lever without thinking about it. If your in the habit of pushing
on the grips to quickly lean the bike, you'll do a quick swerve without wasting any time thinking
about it.
● Realize that entrances to gas stations, alleys, driveways and parking lots are all intersections. 17%
of all motorcycle fatalities happen at an alley. We need to pay more attention to cars coming out of
alleys and driveways.
Practicing these tips will help you minimize the risk every time you find yourself riding in busy city
traffic. Your co-rider will thank you.
